Whether it’s your wisdom teeth or another one, you might be understandably worried about what you can expect. The procedure itself may be easier than you imagine because of state-of-the-art techniques and technology, but you’ll need to recover afterward. Dry socket is a possibility during this, but here’s what you need to know about this condition and how to prevent it.

Just What Is Dry Socket?

When you have a tooth extracted, your body will start the healing process right away to close the socket. A blood clot will form in it to keep the area clean and to protect exposed nerve endings. However, if this component is dislodged or dissolved before your initial recovery is done, then you’ll be left with dry socket. It’s often very painful, but it can happen from using a straw or drinking a hot beverage, to name a few.

How Can I Tell If I Have Dry Socket?

As was mentioned above, this condition often leads to severe discomfort, but there are a few more symptoms you might experience. You may notice you have persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth as well. When you look at the socket itself, it may be empty, or you might be able to see bone.

What Can I Do to Prevent Dry Socket?

While you might be worried about dry socket, it’s often rare to develop if you follow your dentist’s post-op instructions to a T. To help you get prepared, here are some tips you should follow:

Eat a soft food diet as they are easy to chew and gentle. Crunchy, hard, sticky, and hot items can irritate your healing gums, so have options like mashed potatoes and applesauce.

Avoid using a straw as the suction motion can dislodge the needed blood clot. Don’t drink anything alcoholic or caffeinated as well.

Get plenty of rest and take it easy for the first few days. Your body will be able to focus on recovering.

Don’t forget to brush and floss. This will remove harmful bacteria that can cause trouble, but be sure to be gentle around the extraction site.

Follow the simple tips above and your dentist’s specific instructions; that way, you don’t have to stress about dry socket and focus on getting toward the pain-free smile you miss.

About the Practice

At Prime Time Dentistry, our team is proud to serve the Frisco community with compassionate, comprehensive dental care.
