What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone, underneath the gaps left by missing teeth. Through a process called osseointegration, these posts can safely fuse with the bone tissue and take the place of the missing tooth roots. From there, a custom-made dental restoration (usually a crown, bridge, or denture) can be attached, and since it receives support from the underlying implants, patients regain their oral functionality in full.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process can often be categorized into four primary steps:
- Initial Consultation – You will meet with our team to discuss your treatment options and to see if you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants. You must be in decent oral health and have enough jaw tissue remaining to support the implants.
- Dental Implant Surgery – Dental implants are placed directly into the jawbone through a surgical procedure; it takes about one hour to place each implant, and anywhere from one to four or more can be used.
- Osseointegration/Abutment – The implants will fuse with the jaw through a process called osseointegration, allowing them to act as tooth roots. This process takes several months; once it’s finished, you’ll receive abutments, which go on top of the implant posts and secure the replacement teeth.
- Delivery of Final Restoration(s) – Once everything has fully healed, you can receive your custom-made dental restoration, which can restore any number of teeth, regardless of where they are located. You’ll be all set to enjoy your brand-new smile!
Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants don’t just fill the gaps left by missing teeth—they also come with a long list of life-changing benefits, including:
- Dental implants don’t require any specialized form of care; brush and floss daily like usual, and keep up with your routine checkups.
- Dental implants can restore a large portion of a patient’s original bite force.
- They prevent the jawbone deterioration that occurs following tooth loss, which can restore facial structure and even a more youthful appearance.
