What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone, underneath the gaps left by missing teeth. Through a process called osseointegration, these posts can safely fuse with the bone tissue and take the place of the missing tooth roots. From there, a custom-made dental restoration (usually a crown, bridge, or denture) can be attached, and since it receives support from the underlying implants, patients regain their oral functionality in full.
The 4 Step Dental Implant Process

Unlike traditional tooth replacement options like dental bridges and dentures, getting dental implants requires a unique, multi-step process that spans several months. Although this may seem like a long time, most patients feel that the long-term benefits are well worth the wait. At Prime Time Dentistry, we’re proud to partner with local specialists to ensure that your dental implant treatment is done right. While each patient’s treatment will look slightly different, there are four important steps you can expect along the way: the consultation, surgery, osseointegration, and the delivery of your final restoration(s).
Initial Dental Implant Consultation

Your dental implant treatment begins with a consultation with your dentist here at Prime Time Dentistry. At this appointment, we will review your oral health and medical history to see if you qualify for treatment. If necessary, we’ll work with you to complete any preliminary procedures such as gum disease therapy or tooth extractions to get your mouth ready for surgery. Then, we can move on to the planning portion of treatment and will walk you through what you can expect to happen step-by-step, including the timeline and total cost.
Dental Implant Surgery

At Prime Time Dentistry, we proudly partner with local specialists to ensure that your dental implant treatment is done as safely and precisely as possible.
When you arrive for your procedure, your surgical team will numb your mouth. Once you’re comfortable, they’ll make an incision in your gums, place your implant posts, close the gums, and then place protective caps over the exposed implant posts.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment Placement

Osseointegration is the portion of the healing process where your new dental implant posts fuse with your jawbone and is essential for their success. Once you have healed (typically in about three to six months), you will return to have another small procedure to have the abutments placed on your implant posts. As you recover from this surgery over the next few weeks, your final restorations will be crafted from the impressions we made of your mouth at your initial consultation.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations

For the final step, you’ll return to Prime Time Dentistry to have your final restorations placed. These could be in the form of a crown (single tooth) dental bridge (several adjoining teeth) or denture, depending on how many teeth you’re replacing. We’ll also check to ensure that your bite is comfortable, and you’ll be ready to go home and show off and enjoy your newly rebuilt smile!
Benefits of Dental Implants

If you are ready to face tooth loss head-on, then you’ve likely heard quite a bit about dental implants. After all, they are considered the gold standard! That’s because they don’t just fill the gaps left by missing teeth – they also come with a long list of life-changing benefits, including:
Day-to-Day Benefits

Shortly after you’ve healed from the procedure, you’ll enjoy the following benefits:
- Hassle-Free Maintenance – Unlike other tooth-replacement options, dental implants don’t require any specialized form of care. Just brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash daily. Then, come to our office every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning.
- Boosted Self-Esteem – You don’t have to worry – dental implants won’t draw any unwanted attention to your smile. In fact, because they are inserted into your jawbone and the restorations are crafted to look extremely lifelike, they will blend right in!
- Renewed Bite Force – If you’ve been stuck eating soft, bland foods on repeat, you’ll be happy to hear that dental implants can restore a large portion of your original bite force. As a result, you’ll be able to enjoy a much more varied, well-balanced diet moving forward.
Health Benefits

Dental implants in Frisco also benefit your oral and overall health by:
- Allowing You to Eat Nutrient-Dense Foods Again – As we mentioned above, you’ll be able to eat a wider array of foods thanks to your renewed bite force. Not only does this make life more exciting, but it also helps your body get the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it needs to thrive.
- Preserving the Alignment of Your Bite – Losing even just one tooth can cause your teeth to shift out of alignment (a phenomenon known as “dental drift”). The good news is that we can prevent that from happening with a single dental implant, an implant bridge, or an implant-retained partial denture.
- Preventing Bone Loss – Shortly after tooth loss, the jawbone begins to deteriorate. Since dental implants are inserted directly into the jawbone, they can help prevent that from happening!
Long-Term Benefits

Lastly, dental implants are widely loved by patients and our team at Prime Time Dentistry because:
- They Help Maintain a More Youthful Appearance – Since dental implants stimulate your jawbone each time you chew, they help you preserve your facial structure, resulting in a more youthful appearance over time.
- They Are Long-Lasting – With proper care, like brushing your teeth for two minutes each morning or evening, dental implants can last for over 30 years.
- They Are Cost-Effective – Patients often assume that dental implants are too expensive. However, they usually last significantly longer than traditional dental bridges and dentures. As a result, they will likely end up being the best choice for your smile and your wallet.
